The Magic Flute takes us through an astonishing variety of styles, from the simplest little song to the most virtuosic coloratura aria. Mozart’s irrepressible delight in play is set against a depth and seriousness that give each character their unmistakable profile.
Director Cordula Däuper (Albert Herring, Dido and Aeneas, and Comedian Harmonists) will follow these threads and, to open the 2026 Mannheim Summer, create an evening of opera that celebrates the joy of theatre while also inviting us to reflect on our own longings and desires. Production: Nationaltheater Mannheim, 2026.

For this production, instead of creating live drawings on stage, I developed a series of animations that were projected onto the stage during the performance.
My involvement extended beyond video art: I also had the opportunity to contribute directly to the stage design. Set designer Friedrich Eggert entrusted me with developing the visual designs for the painted castle elements.
Below are some of the sketches I created for the theatre’s painting department, alongside photographs showing how the designs were translated into the final stage set.
I have also created two posters for the show
