This mural was created in the basement of a Ukrainian school, which serves as a bomb shelter where children spend time during air raid alerts. Together with the school administration, I developed an artistic concept for the space with the aim of creating a more welcoming environment and offering children a sense of comfort and distraction during stressful moments.
The walls are transformed into a colourful garden inhabited by friendly animals, flowers, and other playful elements. Some details, such as the fireflies running along the walls, are painted with fluorescent paint and glow in the dark. In the event of a power outage, they help illuminate the space and indicate the way in and out of the shelter.
The mural also includes large areas painted with magnetic paint, turning the artwork into an interactive space. Children can create their own creatures and objects by drawing or modelling figures from clay, and then attach them to the walls using magnets. This allows them to actively contribute to the mural and gives them a creative activity to engage with during air raid alerts.
The mural was painted with acrylics.
To gather more experience in wall painting I first have painted the wall in my own bedroom. This was a lot of fun, I now call this room my comfort zone.
